Safety and Security

Safety/Visitor Policy

Parkway Christian Academy takes the safety and supervision of our students very seriously.

Every door on campus is locked during school hours.  There is only one entrance to the school, and it is always monitored.  No door is propped open, and students/staff are trained to not open any outside locked door for any individual.

The school practices fire, tornado, and critical incident drills following the I Love U Guys Foundation procedures on a regular basis.  Each classroom has assigned locations for fire and tornado drills.

There is also a new visitor policy for the school.  We have implemented the Raptor Visitor Management System to strengthen our program of campus safety for students and faculty.  Part of keeping students and faculty safe is knowing who is in our building at all times.  Every staff member of the school must wear a permanent badge every day.  Every non-staff member of the school must receive a visitor’s badge from the receptionist’s desk before going to any area of the building.  The safety of our students is our highest priority.

Visitor Policy

All visitors (Church/School) must check in with the receptionist upon arrival.  If the doors are locked, all visitors must request entrance through a monitoring system.  Upon entering the building, visitors will be asked to present an ID, such as a Driver’s License, which can either be scanned or manually entered into the system.  If a parent or guardian for any reason does not have a US government-issued ID, the school staff member can use any form of identification.  The Raptor system will check to ensure that registered sexual offenders are not entering our school campus without our knowledge.  (No other data from the ID is gathered or recorded and the information is not shared with any outside agency.)  Once entry is approved, the visitor will be issued a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit, along with the destination.  (A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our school simply to drop off or pick up an item at the receptionist’s desk.)

custody of children

On occasion, there may be some custody situations about which Parkway Christian Academy is not aware.  Legally, Parkway Christian Academy cannot keep another parent from coming to visit his/her child at school.  If there is a custody issue with an ex-spouse, Parkway Christian Academy must have a current court order signed by a judge on file so Parkway Christian Academy can help protect each child.  This necessary paperwork must be sent to the school office and not to the child’s teacher.

emergency situations

Parkway Christian Academy is committed to the safety and security of all students, staff, and visitors. Our school practices various emergency drills such as fire drills, severe weather drills, and intruder drills throughout the school year to prepare students and staff for an emergency. All employees and administration have received Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training led by the Pearland Police Department.

In the event of a serious incident or threat, our first priority is to ensure our students and staff are safe; followed by informing/communicating with parents or media. However, we will share the information we have available as we are able to through email, text messages, social media, and the website.

Parkway Christian Academy has a wonderful working relationship with the Pearland Police Department, Brazoria County’s Office of Emergency Management, and the City of Pearland’s Office of Emergency Management. Pearland Police Department has agreed to frequent our parking lots and be present at every outdoor event.

Although many security procedures are confidential to ensure the safety of our students and staff, we can share a few proactive measures that are in place.

  • Exterior door access/card readers in sync with Pearland Police Department
  • Exterior doors are kept locked at all times
  • Interior locks on all classroom doors
  • Additional/upgraded security cameras and monitoring
  • Raptor Emergency Management system on all employee phones (aligned with SRP)
  • CRASE training for all staff
  • Raptor Visitor Check-in
  • New SRP (Standard Response Protocol) in coordination with Pearland ISD, Pearland PD, and other local private schools

One of the most important safety measures we and the community can take is being vigilant and reporting any suspicious behaviors or issues of potential concern. We encourage the reporting of suspected dangers to the appropriate authorities.

Reunification

In certain cases, Parkway Christian Academy may have to initiate a reunification between students and staff. The goal is to make sure each student goes from the caring hands of a staff member to their parents, guardians, or emergency contacts as quickly as possible. (Please update all emergency contact information in FACTS.)

Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders, and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff, and administration. Parkway Christian Academy utilizes the Standard Response Protocol from the I Love U Guys Foundation for lockdown, evacuate, shelter, hold, and secure.

Circumstances may occur at the school that require parents to pick up their students in a formalized, controlled release. This process is called Reunification and may be necessary due to weather, a power outage, hazmat, or if a crisis occurs at the school. The Standard Reunification Method is a protocol that makes this process more predictable and less chaotic for all involved.  An example of our reunification card and further guidelines can be found here:

communication

In the event of an emergency, Parkway Christian Academy will email and/or text parents with information just to reassure them that their children are safe and that no action or response is necessary. Refrain from using your cell phone on or near school property in an emergency. This is not intended to keep you from contacting your child, but rather to keep the cell and data lines clear for communication among emergency responders.
