Fourth Grade Course Goals

Bible: This Bible series focuses on the foundational teachings about the nature and character of God, the qualities of His people, and His church. Students are given an overview of the Bible, with an emphasis on God’s attributes, biblical characters, the early church, and what it means to know Jesus Christ and live for Him.

Social Studies: Fourth Grade Social Studies focuses on nineteenth-century America and the remarkable growth and impact of immigration, evangelism, missionary endeavors, inventions, and much more. Students will study civics and government, and evaluate events in U.S. history from the first Americans through the Civil War, all from a Christian worldview. Students will learn all about Texas history, geography, culture, and economics during our eight-week Texas History Unit.

Language Arts: Language arts in the fourth grade will provide students with a way to express themselves clearly and creatively, while helping them to think logically. The student will be able to recognize and write the four types of sentences and the steps of the writing process. They will apply this information to write letters, thank you notes, and reports. They will also be able to recognize the eight parts of speech and be able to diagram subjects, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Cursive writing will be mastered. Reading comprehension is enforced through the reading of classic novels.

Mathematics: Fourth Grade Arithmetic will provide students the opportunity to develop and reinforce basic skills using spiral learning. The course is structured to promote the mastery of basic facts and concepts needed throughout life. In addition, concepts will be addresses that encourage students to glorify God as they learn about His creation.

Science: In the fourth grade, students will see the plan of God as it is revealed in His orderly creation. It will be a hands-on instructional program. Students will learn to acquire new information, do research, work collaboratively with other students, think critically, use scientific tools, do measurements, solve problems, and evaluate their results. Topics covered will be Life Science, the human body, Physical Science, and Earth Science.

Computer: Computer lab lessons are designed to teach students about the use of technology. The digital curriculum utilized is Keyboarding Without Tears, a row-based approach to teaching the keyboard. Applications and topics include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, computer awareness, coding, internet safety, and searches. To create the most effective learning environment for the students, lessons and online games are integrated with classroom units to enhance learning in the core subject areas.

Music: Students will learn to praise God through music, Students will memorize Bible verses, develop coordination through music and movement, and learn biblical principles. Students will learn age-appropriate music theory. Students will complete graded music worksheets. Students are required to participate in school wide programs.

Physical Education: In Physical Education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically active lifestyle. In grades 3-5, students continue to develop strength, endurance, and flexibility. Students can demonstrate mature form in fundamental locomotor and manipulative skills and can often maintain that form while participating in dynamic game situations. Fourth grade students learn to identify the components of health-related fitness. Students combine locomotor and manipulative skills in dynamic situations with body control.

Spanish: Students will learn the Spanish language via repetition. Each week, lessons will include Greeting and Roll Call, Circle Time, Story Time, Art Time, and Good-bye. Circle Time consists of singing songs with motions to learn conversational Spanish. Story Time will allow students to connect to authentic Spanish.

Art: Students will experiment with various mediums – graphite and colored pencil, crayon, chalk, marker, etc. Each week, students will draw various shapes using a variety of mediums. God has given each of us different gifts, and students will experience this by reviewing artists and their works. Students will appreciate God’s beautiful creation by painting various scenes with watercolors and acrylic paint and drawing three dimensional figures following step by step directions.
