Second Grade Course Goals

Bible: Students will learn Bible truths through the telling of the stories of the Old and New Testaments. They will begin to problem-solve in their own lives by following examples of the faithful men and women in the Bible.

Social Studies: Social Studies in the second grade integrates Bible, citizenship, culture, economics, geography, government, and history. It will help students to understand the Christian principles that have made our country great and will encourage them to love our country and be good citizens. They will learn about the early explorers and Native Americans to the colonies and the Revolutionary War. A knowledge of basic geography will help second graders understand the facts and locations of historical events studied.

Language Arts: One of the most important goals in the second grade is for students to be able to read accurately and with understanding. This goal will be accomplished with a phonics program that teaches rules to help students figure out words, gradually increasing reading confidence. The same rules will be used to teach students to spell, increasing their ability and potential for communicating through the written word. Second grade students learn cursive writing. Reading comprehension is taught, with novel reading introduced in the second semester.

Mathematics: Second Grade Arithmetic lays a solid foundation for higher level math by emphasizing memorization of facts to build mathematical knowledge. It gives children useful tools for counting, adding, telling time and giving change. The Bible-based approach to word problems helps build strong Christian character.

Science: Science in second grade will teach the student scientific inquiry and engineering design skills. Students will get an overview of physical science, space and earth science, and life science. They will also get a close look at science careers.

Computer: Computer lab lessons are designed to teach students about the use of technology. Students will use a variety of applications throughout the year. The digital curriculum utilized is Keyboarding Without Tears, a row-based approach to teaching the keyboard. Applications and topics of study include Microsoft Word, computer awareness, coding, internet safety and searches, and Kid Pix. In order to create the most effective learning environment for the students, lessons and online games are integrated with classroom units to enhance learning in the core subject areas.

Music: Students will learn to praise God through music. Students will memorize Bible verses, learn simple math concepts, develop coordination through music and movement, and learn Bible principles. Students will learn age-appropriate music theory. Students will complete non-graded (first semester) and graded (second semester) music worksheets for the teacher to check for understanding. Students are required to participate in school wide programs.

Physical Education: In Physical Education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to physically active lifestyle. In grades K-2, children learn fundamental movement skills and begin to understand how the muscles, bones, heart, and lungs function in relation to physical activity. Students are engaged in activities that develop basic levels of strength, endurance, and flexibility. In addition, students learn to work safely in group and individual movement settings.

Spanish: Students will learn the Spanish language via repetition. Each week, lessons will include Greeting and Roll Call, Circle Time, Story Time, Art Time, and Good-bye. Circle Time consists of singing songs with motions to learn conversational Spanish. Story Time will allow students to connect to authentic Spanish.

Art: Students will experiment with various mediums – graphite and colored pencil, crayon, chalk, marker, etc. Each week, students will draw various shapes using a variety of mediums. God has given each of us different gifts, and students will experience this by reviewing artists and their works. Students will appreciate God’s beautiful creation by painting various scenes with watercolors and acrylic paint and drawing three dimensional figures following step by step directions.
