Fifth Grade Course Goals

Bible: This course is a survey of the Old Testament. It includes an in-depth study of the lives of various Bible characters presented in chronological order and choices make by these characters which serve as examples for students as they make their own choices.

Social Studies: Fifth grade students will strengthen knowledge of God and be encouraged in Christian growth. They will develop good citizenship through the balanced use of history, geography, government, economics, and cultural skills. They will receive a balanced overview of American heritage. Fifth grade students will develop an understanding of and an ability to discern connections between events. They will also be able to organize knowledge in a spiral pattern and in chronological order. Fifth grade students will learn the geography of all fifty states.

Language Arts: The fifth grade Language Arts program is divided into four categories which consist of grammar, writing, reading, and spelling. By developing each of these areas, students are better able to use God’s gift of thought and language to reason, think, and develop complete, orderly thoughts. With these skills a student is then able to communicate God’s orderly plan purposely and clearly for the world and the plan of salvation for mankind in unique and creative ways.

Mathematics: Fifth grade arithmetic will be taught from a Biblical worldview that stresses both spiritual and academic growth. This traditional arithmetic will lay the foundation for the student’s understanding of mathematics. The student will learn the necessary facts needed for problem solving, reasoning, and critical thinking which will be built upon in consecutive years.

Science: In fifth grade, students will see and understand the plan of God as it is revealed in this orderly creation. Students explore God’s creation in a study of minerals and rocks, fossils, matter and heat, sound and light, weather, ecosystems, and the respiratory and circulatory systems. Students develop science process skills by participating in hands-on activities and projects.

Computer: Computer lab lessons are designed to teach students about the use of technology. Students will use a variety of applications throughout the year. The digital curriculum utilized is Keyboarding Without Tears, a row-based approach to teaching the keyboard. Applications and topics of study include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Excel, computer awareness, coding, internet safety and searches. In order to create the most effective learning environment for the students, lessons are integrated with classroom units to enhance learning in the core subject areas.

Music: Students will learn to read, write, and reproduce music notation. Students will create and explore new musical ideas. Students will participate in two concerts. Students will complete theory related worksheets for a grade.

Physical Education: In Physical Education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development, and access to a physically active lifestyle. The student exhibits a physically active lifestyle and understands the relationship between physical activity and health throughout the lifespan. Fifth grade students demonstrate competence such as improved accuracy in manipulative skills in dynamic situations. Basic skill such as jumping rope, moving to a beat, and catching and throwing should have been mastered in previous years and can now be used in game-like situations. Students continue to assume responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. Students continue to learn the etiquette of participation and can resolve conflicts during games and sports in acceptable ways.

Spanish: Students will learn the Spanish language via repetition. Each week, lessons will include Greeting and Roll Call, Circle Time, Story Time, Art Time, and Good-bye. Circle Time consists of singing songs with motions to learn conversational Spanish. Story Time will allow students to connect to authentic Spanish.

Art: Students will experiment with various mediums – graphite and colored pencil, crayon, chalk, marker, etc. Each week, students will draw various shapes using a variety of mediums. God has given each of us different gifts, and students will experience this by reviewing artists and their works. Students will appreciate God’s beautiful creation by painting various scenes with watercolors and acrylic paint and drawing three dimensional figures following step by step directions.
