Below are the most commonly asked questions regarding the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA). If you have further questions, please contact our head of school, Beth Rogers, at brogers@parkwaychristianacademy.com or our finance secretary, Lisa Wood, at finance@parkwaychristianacademy.com.
What is TEFA?
The Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program is a new state initiative that provides financial assistance to qualifying families who choose to enroll their children in an approved private school. Instead of funds going directly to a public school, a portion of state education funding is placed into an account that families can use toward eligible educational expenses such as private school tuition and certain required academic services or materials.
TEFA is designed to expand educational options for families while allowing students to attend a participating school that best fits their needs. Families who qualify and are approved through the state’s application process will receive access to these funds and then direct them to their chosen participating school, such as Parkway Christian Academy, to help offset the cost of attendance.
Will parkway accept TEFA Funds?
Yes. Parkway Christian Academy is registered in the TEFA system and will accept TEFA funding for both newly admitted and currently enrolled students, in accordance with state guidelines.
The State of Texas has allocated a limited amount of TEFA funding for the 2026–2027 school year, which means not all applicants statewide will receive an award. Even so, we encourage all interested and eligible families to apply when family registration opens.
Are current families eligible for TEFA funds?
Yes. Both currently enrolled students and newly admitted students may apply for TEFA funding.
Eligibility and award decisions are determined by the State of Texas, not by Parkway Christian Academy. While Parkway manages its own admissions and enrollment standards and policies, the state alone decides which applicants receive TEFA funds and the amount awarded. All interested families must apply directly through the state’s TEFA application process.
If approved, families may direct their TEFA funds toward tuition and eligible academic fees at Parkway Christian Academy.
Are students (current or new) who receive TEFA funding and choose Parkway guaranteed enrollment?
No. Receiving TEFA funding from the State of Texas does not guarantee admission to Parkway Christian Academy.
The state’s TEFA award process and Parkway’s admissions process are separate. All new students must complete Parkway’s standard admissions and acceptance process before they can be enrolled, regardless of TEFA status.
Current students must also complete their normal annual enrollment requirements to secure their seat for the coming school year.
What do TEFA funds cover?
TEFA funds may be applied toward tuition and required academic fees at Parkway Christian Academy, in accordance with state guidelines.
They do not cover non-instructional or optional costs such as enrollment or registration fees, lunch, Before or After School Care, field trips, parties, extracurricular activities, or other incidental expenses.
What grades at PWCA are able to register for TEFA funding?
Kindergarten through 7th grade only. PreK and MDO are not eligible at PWCA for TEFA funding.
How will TEFA payments be processed at Parkway?
TEFA funds are expected to be distributed through the state’s payment system directly to participating schools on behalf of approved students. Parkway’s Finance Office will work with each family to ensure those funds are correctly applied to the student’s tuition and eligible academic fees.
Families remain responsible for any portion of tuition and fees not covered by TEFA funds. Because this is a new statewide program, payment timing may vary, especially during the initial rollout. If TEFA funds are delayed, families may need to make temporary payment arrangements with our Finance Office to keep their account in good standing.
If I receive TEFA funding, am I still eligible for any discounts or scholarships?
No. Discounts and scholarships are only offered to those who do not qualify for TEFA.
